Join Dr. Hannah Penn (Willamette University) and Ascension music director Emma Cowell for a lecture-recital on the songs of iconoclastic Baroque singer and composer Barbara Strozzi (1619-1677).
A joyful choral service in celebration of the Nativity, with music my Ralph Vaughan Williams, David Willcocks, and more.
The service will also feature an anthem by English composer Jane Savage (1752/1753-1824), one of the first women to compose music for Anglican services. The choir will sing her ”Hymn for Christmas Day,” which tells the story of the angels’ annunciation to the shepherds in music for choir, organ, and soloists.
Join us for a family-friendly service with favorite Christmas hymns. As is our tradition, we will sing Silent Night by candlelight.
The Star of Bethlehem: A Story of Awe and Wonder.
December 21, 4:00 p.m., Reinhart Hall
We welcome amateur astronomer and astrophotographer Rod Pommier, MD. Rod will share intriguing archeology and modern astronomy findings surrounding our scriptural understanding of the Star of Bethlehem, the birth of Jesus, and the visit of the Magi. Rod will illustrate this talk with his beautiful astrophotographs, as well as images of relics seen during his travels to various countries in search of clues to “the greatest astronomical mystery of all time.” This talk is sure to be an enjoyable and thought-provoking addition to the Advent and Christmas experience.
A suggested donation of $20.00 will be used to support necessary IT upgrades so that we can continue to provide quality programs at Ascension Parish.
Join us in Ascension’s lovely, historic Chapel for a carol singalong accompanied by our Baroque-style Coulter tracker organ. You’ll also enjoy a selection of traditional carols arranged for a cappella women’s trio, performed by local vocalists Ireland McNeill and Mila Ortiz, with Ascension music director Emma Cowell.

The service will also feature an anthem by English composer Theophania Cecil (1782-1879), one of the first women to compose music for Anglican services. The choir will sing her anthem “Brightness of Thy Father’s Glory” in an edition newly edited by our Minister of Music.
